Frequently Asked Questions

What is Calcium Chloride?
Calcium chloride, CaCl2 is an inorganic compound that classifies as a salt. It is composed of calcium and sodium, and is a versatile substance with a variety of applications and uses across many different sectors.
What are some of the common uses of calcium chloride?
Calcium chloride is used in Industrial refrigeration, road stabilization, oilfield fluids, concrete accelerators, and soil remediation. In Edmonton, it is commonly used for de-icing purposes as it melts up to eight times as much ice as does salt alone – within the first 30 minutes at 20F (-7C) following application
Where does Calcium Chloride come from?
As the leading Edmonton calcium chloride experts, Ward Chemicals has been producing calcium chloride products since 1985 from the Calling Lake well site, located 200 km north of Edmonton. We also have an upgrader facility in Villeneuve, Alberta, which is our central nexus for manufacturing, producing and storage of all our chemical products. These sites have the capability to meet the calcium chloride demands of our Canadian and North American customers.
Why is Ward Chemical a trusted source of Calcium Chloride?
Every Alberta-made calcium chloride load we ship is sampled and checked to ensure that your calcium chloride meets and surpasses a standard of excellence. From calcium chloride production to application, you can trust Ward Chemical to provide the best in calcium chloride products.
How long does Calcium Chloride last?
When Calcium Chloride is stored and properly protected from moisture contact, it can last throughout its shelf life (up to thirty-six months). Please contact us today to discuss ways to properly store your Calcium Chloride.
What effect does Calcium Chloride have on water?
Calcium chloride is a pH adjuster/water softener and is commonly used as a brine in refrigeration plants, as well as a tool for ice and dust control on roads. It absorbs moisture from the air, and when it's added to liquids it absorbs water.
What are the best practices when it comes to storing Calcium Chloride?
Whether you bought a supply in bulk, pellets, flake, or liquid, it is best to keep your products in a temperature stable and dry environment. As moisture exposure may ruin the quality of your product, please ensure that opened packages are tightly resealed, and new products are stored in a way that will not cause leakages in the sealing.
Is Calcium Chloride environmentally friendly?
We advise our customers to always handle our products in careful moderation and care, as excess calcium chloride may leach into your local waterways or soil, which may affect the growth of your plants in the springtime. If you notice a spillage in your liquid or bulk calcium chloride supply, follow the necessary safety precautions to ensure that your products are still safe to use for your next application. CaCl₂ is not dangerous and is comprised of naturally occurring elements necessary for plant life.
Is Calcium Chloride the best choice for de-icing concrete driveways and sidewalks?
Yes! Calcium chloride has exothermic (gives off heat) and hygroscopic (attracts moisture) properties that allow you to apply less for more results when it comes to de-icing your driveways and sidewalks. It can also work up to four times faster than rock salt application, leaves no leftover residue, and has a lower risk of bolstering the freeze-thaw cycle of ice melt.
Will Calcium Chloride damage my concrete driveway or rust my vehicle?
No. Our calcium chloride de-icing products are designed to defrost asphalt and concrete surfaces. It will not damage your asphalt or concrete, and it does not have the properties that will lead to rust formation on your vehicle or cause damage.
Does CaCl₂ help in controlling dust?
Yes! As Calcium chloride is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts moisture from its surroundings, it can help aid in your management of dust and keep your surface tops damp. For more information about how calcium chloride can help with your dust control, contact us at (780) 940-1133!
